Sodium for Athletes

Sodium for Athletes

Here is what I do for salt loss when running.

After a workout in the heat of the southern Utah desert my clothes are sweat drenched with white salt stains. Sodium is essential to maintaining the body’s fluid levels. Loss of salt can also lead to muscle cramping. It is therefore essential to replenish salt after sweating a great deal in a run or any other physical activity.

Here are the 3 ways I maintain sodium levels during and after my long runs.

  1. I eat PowerBar PowerGels every 4-5 miles while running. PowerGel has 200 mg of sodium and a thin texture that makes it quick and easy to eat. My husband and I buy PowerGel in bulk because we go through it so fast.

2.   I take ReLyte Sport Caps every hour of running with water. ReLyte Sport Caps are an electrolyte replacer and cramp eliminator. Check out my post about ReLyte Sport Caps here.

3. I add salt to my food after a run. I recently tried Real Salt and love that the only ingredient is… Salt! You can find Real Salt locally at Real Foods Market, 695 S. 100 W. St. George, UT or on-line at  realsalt.com

I recommend talking to a health professional about your salt intake. Salt has been linked to high blood pressure and it can be easy to consume more than necessary.

Happy running and stay hydrated!

Re-Lyte Sport Caps Review

Re-Lyte Sport Caps

Electrolyte Replacer & Cramp Eliminator

It is a whopping 118 degrees outside in southern Utah right now! Talk about sweating. Now I am getting into my longer training runs in preparation for the St. George Marathon. I have to be up by 5 am to run at the coolest time of the day. With all this extreme heat I need to be sure I am hydrated and fueled to go the distance and I have found Re-Lyte Sport Caps have helped.

Redmond Trading, a local Utah company, creates a product called Re-Lyte Sport Caps. Re-Lyte is an electrolyte replacer and cramp eliminator. It contains over 60 trace minerals including: Sodium, Calcium, Potassium, Sulphur, Magnesium, Iron, Phosphorus, Iodine, Manganese, Copper, and Zinc. These vegetable based capsules are filled with real salt and minerals and have helped me stay hydrated and cramp free during my long runs.

Last Saturday I ran 17.3 miles with the St. George Running Club. We started running at 5:30 am, but it was still hot. Suggested usage for Re-Lyte is one capsule with water every hour during exercise or as needed. I took one capsule at about mile 9 as the temperature started to increase. I did not have any stomach issues taking Re-Lyte and no muscle cramping. After the run was over another runner passed out. Yikes! I gave him a Re-Lyte capsule to go with the water he was downing and he seemed to improve.

Check out the Real Foods Supermarket in St. George, Logan, Salt Lake, and Heber City to purchase Re-Lyte Sports Caps and other excellent Redmond products. Real Foods just opened their 4th store opening in the Salt Lake Tribune.
