Sodium for Athletes
Here is what I do for salt loss when running.
After a workout in the heat of the southern Utah desert my clothes are sweat drenched with white salt stains. Sodium is essential to maintaining the body’s fluid levels. Loss of salt can also lead to muscle cramping. It is therefore essential to replenish salt after sweating a great deal in a run or any other physical activity.
Here are the 3 ways I maintain sodium levels during and after my long runs.
- I eat PowerBar PowerGels every 4-5 miles while running. PowerGel has 200 mg of sodium and a thin texture that makes it quick and easy to eat. My husband and I buy PowerGel in bulk because we go through it so fast.
3. I add salt to my food after a run. I recently tried Real Salt and love that the only ingredient is… Salt! You can find Real Salt locally at Real Foods Market, 695 S. 100 W. St. George, UT or on-line at realsalt.com
I recommend talking to a health professional about your salt intake. Salt has been linked to high blood pressure and it can be easy to consume more than necessary.
Happy running and stay hydrated!
